John and Irene Oakley - 650 Game King

Wow am I a Happy Chappie!

Having owned a boat for some 13 years, the desire to upgrade to a hard top had become paramount for this fledgling baby boomer. I convinced my wife Irene that purchasing wisely was an investment and the number of reputable boats on the market today was mind boggling, so we listed the attributes required to suit our needs.

A trip to the Bay of Plenty Boat Show introduced us to the Marine Centre display – Irene and I both commented on the Hard Top they had on display was eye catching, stylish, but had a gutsy look about it. The Extreme 700 was considerably bigger than our 6mtr boat and Irene felt it was too big for us to handle at the ramp if the wind got up. They informed us a 650 model was made, so arrangements were made to sea trial the Extreme 650 Game King. Garry Bint from the Marine Centre met us at the Sulphur Point boat ramp and another couple joined us for the ride, the 5 of us set off. I was totally impressed with the stability of the boat, 4 adults moving around as we made our way down the Harbour. The wind was running against the tide and the entrance to the harbour was like a giant washing machine but the Extreme got up on top and skipped over it as though it wasn't there, we were all impressed at the ease of handling and the comfort as the Extreme went through its paces. On our return to the ramp, Irene and I were both excited that the boat that caught our eye at the Boat Show, had more than stood up to the sea trials.

An invitation to visit the factory in Whakatane the next day was taken up this sealed the deal for us, the factory was tidy well run and the staff looked happy as they went about their work the standard of workmanship oozed with pride.

Glenn Shaw is a no nonsense man who is extremely proud of what he is achieving and his customer service left us in no doubt - this is where we wanted our boat built. We placed our order and the invitation to watch the progress of the project was taken up, with four visits to the plant during the construction, we made minor changes as we went along but nothing was any trouble.

The confidence we gained from seeing the project form the start and the strength in the structure along with the extra add ons set this model's standard well beyond its competitors.

We have had our boat around 3 months and we have come home in some pretty testing North Easterlies and feel so safe and dry, the handling at the ramp is a breeze. All in all we are totally satisfied and our thanks go to Garry, Berni and Glenn for helping us to make the right decision.
